Frequently Asked Question
Tintypes (c. 1856–1900s) and ambrotypes (c. 1854–1880s) are 19th-century, one-of-a-kind, “direct positive” photographs created using the wet-plate collodion process. Tintypes are images on dark-lacquered iron (coated aluminium nowadays), offering durability, while ambrotypes are on fragile glass, both producing unique images rather than negatives.
- Yes, they are. Tintypes are made through a complex process with many variables in the chemistry and technique, so small imperfections are expected. Each tintype is unique, and minor flaws are a natural part of the process.
- In most cases, I can reshoot for a £40 fee (per plate) to cover materials and time if you are unhappy with how you look or are very particular. However, I will re-shoot at no extra cost if:
- There is a chemical issue that affects the final image, or
- I made a mistake during the process (it happens occasionally).
As the process is handcrafted, the time is approximate.
This process must be developed within 5 minutes of exposure; therefore, you will see the result shortly after the photo is taken.
Subjects (You and other participants): The photo session requires very powerful lighting. I would not recommend exposing your children to this kind of light. In addition, the process of focusing and taking the image requires the subjects to stay still, which is usually very hard for children, too.
After the plate is developed, it must be protected with a coat of lacquer. This process can take around 15 min per plate; however, I prefer to wash and rinse the plate before applying the laquer. You can come back later and collect your portrait (usually 48 hours after the session), or I can send it to you for an extra cost.
Your photo will be carefully packed, including a “Certification of Authenticity” and a stand.
You can come to the studio and collect it, or I can send it to you by postage (postage cost not included)

- Yes, I can. While there is only one original tintype, I can create a high-resolution print for you to share or keep.
- Tintype photography reveals every detail with honesty and depth, offering a raw and authentic portrait unlike any other. If you expect a heavily edited or flawless image, this process may not be for you. But in these honest portraits, what you might see as imperfections become powerful expressions of character and beauty. I find these images striking and unforgettable, and those who choose this experience value the truth and artistry it brings. Tintypes are not for everyone—but for many, they become their most cherished portrait
